Mathematics

Summer Math/ELA
The St. Louis Cardinals is offering a summer slugger program to help students prevent the summer slide.  This appears to be open to 4th and 5th grade students.  Please check out the information here.  Students who participate can earn a free ticket to the game!

Math Specialist Cohort:

We are so excited to have this opportunity to create a math specialist cohort in our district!  The credits for this course can be applied towards your masters or doctorate!  While the certification is for grades 1-6, anyone interested can participate!

Please see the following link for more information and join us on April 17th @ 4pm at WMS Library to learn more!

February Notes:
4th Grade Updates from 2/21/18:
Today 4th grade completed the Data Analysis Assessment, which is Unit 9.  We then looked at the Item Specifications from DESE for each standard and made sure that the district assessments aligned.  The following changes to assessments were made...
- multi-step word problems were added to Unit 2 and Unit 3
- Number patterns on Unit 2 were changed to only include one operation
- The Multiples question on Unit 3 was changed to only include the first 5
- A multiplying a fraction by a whole number question was added to Unit 5 to include a product greater than 1
- Types of triangles were added to Unit 8

During the Geometry unit, students should focus on quadrilaterals and triangles.  We will specify this in the curriculum documents for next year.

Kindergarten:
1. The assessments  (in the team drive under the assessment folder) are to there to
help you assess the students.  There may be times where your professional judgement
can be used (example/ if a student(s) are demonstrating they can count numbers or
write to the given number during classwork, you do not need to give a formal assessment).
In place of these assessments you can at times use teacher observation, classroom data
and /or SGA scores (which is a required assessment). If you are unsure, feel free to reach out
to Katherine Schack.
2.  If you are needing additional resources, please see the Unit Resources document on
the Team Drive.  There you will find a resource/activity for each key skill in the curriculum..

*** COMING SOON ***
~ Discussed possible unit changes for next year:
  2018-2019 Math Unit Order
Number Sense
 Addition/Subtraction
Money Part 1
Multiplication/Division 2, 5, 10
Measurement
Multiplication/Division 3, 4
Time
Money Part 2
Geometry/Fractions
Data Analysis

3rd Grade:  Worked on both the regular and alternate versions of the assessments.
Please let Katherine Schack know if you find any errors.
More are being uploaded throughout the week.

4th Grade:  Worked on the next unit assessments.
The team will be meeting again later this month to finish up the assessments.

5th Grade:
  • Created assessments for Unit 4B, Unit 5 and Unit 6
  • Created alternate assessments for Units 4A  and 4B

As we were creating the assessments for the final units, we noticed some
overlapping of targets and looked closely at how to make the progression flow for
next year.  We noticed in Unit 4A part 2, there were some higher level questions
on the Cartesian plane that should really be in  a later unit.  We used some of the
problems again on the later test, where they should actually be taught.
FYI - so you may see a repeated question on a test THIS YEAR!!!

Next year, we would like to make Algebra Unit 5 (this year it is 6) and Data Analysis
Unit 6 (this year it is 5) so that the flow of the Cartesian Plane will be as follows:

Unit 4B -the learning target should be just to identify points on a  Cartesian
plane
Unit 5 Algebra- will have the learning target where students  are actually
plotting the points into the quadrant
Unit 6-Data Analysis- the learning target will be to analyze the data from
the points on the graph

Anyone interested in attending a math PD will need to go through their building for funds and permission to attend.
