Science

Teams have been working hard on new Science Curriculum! At the 3-6 Grade Chair Meeting (April, 4th) the following was shared...

January Updates
K-8 Curriculum teams are finishing up the curriculum documents.  We are hoping to be ready to share them with teachers in February.  6th, 7th, and 8th grade curriculum teams will begin writing a new common assessment to begin using in the 2018-2019 school year.  Beginning in the 2018-19 school year, all K-5 teachers will assess science using learning goals on the report card.

We have a new course that will be offered to high school freshmen, Principles of Physical and Natural Sciences.  The course is designed to help students see all of the different areas of science that we have to offer as electives.

We are also in the process of rewriting the Chemistry curriculum to align to the new Missouri Learning Standards.  We anticipate that course being rolled out in the 2019-20 school year.

K-5 Teachers, the curriculum teams are hard at work unpacking the new MLS, which are written as performance events, to determine what students need to learn to be able to meet each standard!  We are hoping to share these with everyone in the next couple of months!

6-8 Science teachers, check this Smore out - https://www.smore.com/mb47v

9-12 Science teachers, we begin revamping Chemistry curriculum this week!

Over 140 activities and you can sort by grade! A great place to get some engineering design practice for your students!

The new Missouri Learning Standards for Science

The new standards are written as performance events.  This means that they are targets intended for students to be able to achieve by the end of the unit.  The curriculum teams are working hard to unpack these and determine what skills and knowledge our students will need to know to be able to achieve the performance event.

While there will be some moving of topics/ units across the board, the biggest change in science is the shift from one dimensional teaching of science facts to the three dimensional teaching of the how, what, and why of science.  The new standards have woven together cross cutting concepts, science and engineering practices, and disciplinary core ideas to create standards that allow students to learn by doing.

Missouri created their own new learning standards however they closely resemble the NGSS standards and are written with the same idea of three dimensions.

Here is a great you tube video to help teachers learn more about the new science standards and the three dimensions.
